Introducing Parli: The Spoken Language of Parafolks in Paralives

Recently, Paralives Studio unveiled an early preview of the conversational sounds for Parafolk, showcasing their ongoing efforts in bringing the characters to life. This comes after a series of updates, offering glimpses of Parafolk interacting with each other and the environment, as well as displaying emotional expressions and animations.

The development team emphasised the importance of relationships and interacting with other characters in Paralives’ live mode. To achieve this, Parafolk will communicate in a fictional language called Parli, pronounced “par-lee.”

The primary objective of the language was to cultivate a sense of familiarity while simultaneously distinguishing itself from English gibberish, establishing a distinct linguistic identity for Paralives.

As part of the development process, Alice, an animator on the Paralives team, created a range of talking interactions and reaction animations. These will be utilized when Parafolk engage in conversations, ask questions, argue with each other, tell jokes, flirt, and more. Additionally, it was revealed that group conversations will also be possible for Parafolk!

While the animations and voice recordings showcased in the video are still a work in progress, they provide a glimpse into the immersive potential of Parli. A few things to be noted:

  • The video introduces a “Talk with” interaction to demonstrate different discussion animations. However, this interaction is specific to the video and will function differently in the final game, providing a more nuanced experience.
  • Voice Customization: In the Paramaker, players will have the freedom to choose the voice for their characters. This feature will allow further personalization of Parafolk, ensuring each one is more unique and distinct.
  • Demo Recordings: The voice recordings presented in the video are only demos! Professional voice actors will provide the final voice overs during the later stages of development, guaranteeing an exceptional and polished audio experience.

Language Goals

Paralives Studio revealed they established specific goals when creating Parli, aiming to create a language that:

  • Consists of incomprehensible gibberish, allowing players to craft their own narratives freely.
  • Stands out from other fictional languages in franchises, providing a unique and distinctive linguistic experience.
  • Embraces minimalism, favouring concise and straightforward sentences over lengthy and convoluted ones, adhering to the principle of “less is more.
  • Sounds realistic enough to give the impression of a language that could exist in the real world.
  • Strikes a delicate balance, neither overly silly nor overly serious, to create a warm and cozy effect within the game.

With these goals in mind, the studio embarked on a comprehensive testing phase. They delved into the exploration of sounds, syllables, and linguistic structures, meticulously refining and reshaping them until they discovered the most preferred version of Parli.

The primary objective of the language was to cultivate a sense of familiarity while simultaneously distinguishing itself from English gibberish, establishing a distinct linguistic identity for Paralives. Noteworthy language rules were implemented, such as limiting words to two vowels or placing two consonants consecutively, further enhancing the distinctiveness of the language.

The introduction of Parli into the world of Paralives represents a significant milestone in the game’s development. This new spoken language should surely breathe life into the social interactions of your Parafolks!
