  • Gift giving

    Profile Photo

Most of this is just a copy over from what I said on discord. Just wanted to share it here. Revised it a little.

The ability to give gifts. It could be a friendly social gesture, a romantic gesture, a familial gesture(kind of like their kids or their siblings give them gifts). Parafolk could also send each other things in the mail. Maybe you could even make a gift basket with up to 3 to 5 different items for example. If hospitals are a thing, they could make a get well basket or bring flowers/fruit.

Event specific gift giving could be like a huge stuffed animal from a carnival(one para was playing a game and they won it so it’s possible they gift it to another(child, girl/boyfriend, younger/older sibling, friend, their crush, etc.,).

Also, gift giving at any time, not just special occasions (like birthdays or potentially festivals). Gifts could range between homemade(arts/crafts, sewing/knitting them something, homebaked goods or anything your para cooked), store bought(toys, clothes, chocolates, gift cards, etc.,), paradimes, from the planet(flowers, fruits, vegetables etc.,).

    What do you think?

  • I think that is a great idea. To add to that, Para’s will have different reactions to the gift based on who got it for them, when they receive it, and what is. They can reject the gift, become angry, sad, happy, etc. Gifts could also pertain to a specific category. Depending on complexity for the developers, this category can be pre-programmed by the game or selected by the player.

For example, a red rose (category romantic gift). Para A does not like Para B in a romantic way, but is a ‘good’ Para. Para B gives Para A a red rose. Para A will accept it with a smile to not hurt the feelings of Para B and later gives it to the first random Para on the street. If Para A had liked Para B, Para A would be very excited upon receiving the rose, it would create a positive memory, the rose would be saved in the inventory until placed in a vase on the bedside table. Para A would want to give Para B something as well and their relationship would strengthen.

  • I love the idea of gift giving as long as it’s something the para already has in their inventory. If they want to give a rose, they should first have to buy a rose or cut it from their garden. NPC’s should also be able to give gifts but also based on what they have in their inventory and according to their financial status. Cash strapped paras should not be giving away luxury cars.

I agree about the luxury car thing, but I always found giving gifts in the Sims to be really annoying because you had to have the gift in your inventory. Maybe this is just me being lazy, but I’d like to be able to buy gifts on the spot for giving.

totally agree with the inventory thing. maybe if it was possible to do it both ways? for instance, when you select the option of “give gift” a menu could pop up with the option to either choose from inventory or purchase one. that way if you win something from a carnival or bake something you’re able to gift it from inventory, but also have the choice to purchase a quick rose or card that you don’t already have.
